ESU organizes inaugural exhibit for new EAC gallery

Wednesday, December 16, 2009

The Center for Great Plains Studies is pleased to announce the creation of “Iconic Kansas,” an exhibition of photographs curated by National Geographic photographer, Jim Richardson, and mounted as the inaugural show in the newly constructed galleries of the Emporia Arts Council. In addition to selecting images, Richardson will be on hand to discuss the show during grand opening festivities scheduled for January 2011.

Jim Richardson is a photographer for National Geographic Magazine and a contributing editor of its sister publication, “Traveler Magazine.” Richardson has photographed more than 25 stories for National Geographic, with his latest, “Our Good Earth and The Death of Night,” appearing in September and November, 2008. In addition to his color photography, Richardson has built a distinguished body of black-and-white documentary work about rural Kansas life.

“My roots in Kansas and the plains have been my abiding passion. From my early newspaper days on, I have photographed everyday life,” Richardson said. Richardson will select works for the exhibit from the Great Plains Photo Project, which features images from both amateur and professional photographers.

The Great Plains Photo Project, undertaken in 2007 by the Center for Great Plains Studies, is an online collection of images celebrating the diversity of life, culture, landscape, history, and simple beauty found in the Great Plains. To date, the site features over 150 images from 18 photographers, each bringing a distinctive vision of the vast prairies of the Great Plains to life.

“We are delighted to cooperate with the Emporia Arts Council in having this show as the first exhibit in the new EAC building, and we are especially pleased to have a photographer of Jim Richardson’s reputation as our guest curator. He will have some outstanding images from which to choose,” said Jim Hoy, director of the Center for Great Plains Studies.

This exhibit is made possible in part by funding from the Kathrine K. White Grant Program at Emporia State University and the Center for Great Plains Studies. Additional information about the show can be found by visiting the Center’s Web site at www.emporia.edu/cgps, e-mailing cgps@emporia.edu, or by calling 620-341-5574.

Hosted by Emporia State University, the Center for Great Plains Studies combines the talents of faculty members from art to zoology who study the common and uncommon elements of the Great Plains that invest the region with its unique texture and spirit.
