TOPEKA — National Guard armories in Burlington and Council Grove were among 18 armories that will be clossed next year.
Maj. Gen Tod Bunting, the state’s adjutant general, announced the closings Friday afternoon. The National Guard had a total of 56 armories statewide before the closings were announced.
Other armories that will be closed are at Atchison, Chanute, Cherryvale, Council Grove, Fort Scott, Garden City, Garnett, Goodland, Horton, Kingman, Larned, Phillipsburg, Russell, Sabetha, Salina, Troy, and Winfield.
Bunting said the closings will save almost $157,000 in the current budget year and more than $260,000 in the fiscal year that starts July 1.
Operations will be consolidated at the remaining 38 armories. Equipment and personnel will be transferred to those locations through the middle of 2010.
