Ribbon cutting
The Emporia Area Chamber and Visitors Bureau will be host for a ribbon cutting at 4 p.m. Tuesday for the Emporia State Federal Credit Union’s new location, 2332 Industrial Road. The grand opening will be held Monday through Saturday. For more information, see www.esfcu.com.
Homebuyer workshop
A first-time homebuyer workshop, free of charge, will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Dec. 17 in the city conference room, west entrance, 516 Mechanic St. This workshop is for those interested in buying their first home through Emporia’s first-time homebuyer grant program. A $4,000 grant may be available for those who meet the qualifications to buy a home, stated the news release. Topics include credit readiness, affordability, down payment, working with lenders and realtors, selecting a home, offers and closings and home maintenance. Registration is due by Dec. 15 and can be made by calling 343-4285 or (800) 383-0217. Sponsors are Commerce Bank and Trust; Housing and Credit Counseling, Inc.; the City of Emporia; the Federal Home Loan Bank of Topeka and the Affordable Housing Program.
Donation
Verizon Wireless announced in a recent news release it has donated $1,500 to SOS in Emporia. The grant “will help further (the) SOS mission to end domestic and sexual violence, child abuse and neglect through service, education and advocacy,” stated the news release. The gift was made possible by the Verizon Wireless HopeLine program, which converts no-longer-used wireless telephones into support for survivors of domestic violence. Meals
Capitol Federal employees supplied traditional Thanksgiving meals to 250 families in the communities where the bank’s offices are located, stated a news release from Capitol Federal. In Emporia, the bank worked with the Salvation Army to provide meals to local families.
State contract
Purple Wave Auction was selected by the Kansas Department of Administration as the auctioneer service for the State of Kansas, stated the news release from Purple Wave. The service was retained through June 30, 2011, as the on-call auctioneering service provider for the state, with the current contract extendable at the state’s option for up to three one-year periods, according to the news release. The Kansas Department of Revenue-Alcoholic Beverage Control Division separately awarded Purple Wave a contract to sell seized assets for the ABC through Sept. 30, 2010, with seven one-year renewal options. In 2008, Purple Wave “sold roughly $5 million in surplus assets for more than 100 governmental entities including the Kansas Department of Transportation, Kansas Highway Patrol, Kansas Department of Revenue and the City of Wichita.” All upcoming and past auctions, including results, are open to the public and available at www.purplewave.com, said the release. Tuxedo award
Designs by Sharon, 703 Commercial St., recently received an Elite Retailer of the Year award from Jim’s Formal Wear, “the largest formal wear distribution network in the U.S. with over 5,000 independent retailers,” stated the news release. The award is based on rental volume, order accuracy and exceptional customer service. Designs by Sharon, owned and operated by Sharon Ewing of Emporia, has been renting tuxedos from Jim’s since 1994.
Spotlight
Roselle Williams has opened A Matter of Touch at 2715 Candlewood Drive. The business offers massage therapy and facials.
Williams has had her massage business in the Burlington area for 14 years and is now available to clients in the Emporia area. Some of her services include full body massage, upper body massage, neck and shoulders or a deep foot massage. She is also available for on-site chair massage “which is a great break in anyone’s day at the office,” she said in her news release. Williams is also a licensed aesthetician and offers a variety of facial treatments, waxing and skincare products.
She is available by appointment only at (620) 364-9340. From 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at her business, she is offering a free chair massage.
