Wins over ENMU, Mankato run ESU’s record to 4-0
The third-ranked Emporia State volleyball team completed a weekend sweep Saturday at the UNO Volleyball Showcase, sweeping both Eastern New Mexico and Minnesota State-Mankato in three sets.
The Hornets (4-0) closed their showcase performance by posting a .296 hitting percentage against Mankato and registering a season-high 47 kills, as well as six service aces. The Hornets beat Mankato by scores of 25-22, 25-14 and 25-22.
Arica Shepard had 16 kills and 10 digs to notch her third double-double of the year. Brittney Miller added 11 kills for her first double-figure performance of the season. Megan Lueger and Amy Byfield each added 16 digs to lead the Hornets, and Ting Liu had 42 assists and one service ace, her fifth service ace of the weekend. Freshman Jacelyn DeMotte had four service aces, finishing the showcase with a total of seven.
The Hornets had an easier time with Eastern New Mexico, winning by scores of 25-11, 25-14 and 25-13. They hit .360 for the game, had 11 blocks and held ENMU to a -.012 hitting percentage. Shepard had 13 kills, Liu had 31 assists and Byfield had 10 digs.
The Hornets next travel to Midwestern State in Wichita Falls, Texas, for a tournament Friday and Saturday. They’ll open against Tarleton State at 1:30 p.m. Friday.
