Church bells will peal citywide on Tuesday as local groups kick off National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month.
According to information from Celeste Wempe and Sarah Riley-Hansen of Corner House, the bell-ringing will begin at 8 a.m. to mark the beginning of the 20th annual celebration of recovery.
This year’s national theme is “Join the Voices for Recovery: Together We Learn, Together We Heal.”
The special month is to encourage people to educate themselves and others about resources available to help people who suffer from substance use disorders, and to help their families as well.
Flint Hills Recovery-Oriented Systems of Care Coalition, an Emporia partnership, is made up of treatment providers, prevention professionals and community corrections staff. The group has planned special events to highlight recovery throughout the month.
Proclamations declaring September as as alcohol and drug addiction recovery month are expected to be signed by commissioners in Emporia, Lyon, Chase, Morris, Greenwood, Coffey, Wabaunsee and Osage counties.
A woman who is in recovery will tell her story Friday on KVOE AM during the Talk of Emporia show.
A Recovery Month Cookout is planned from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 14, with free food, games and prizes. The get-together is planned to allow people in recovery to celebrate with their families and friends who have supported them on their way to recovery, according to a news release.
For questions or for more information on events, call Riley-Hansen at 342-3015 or Wempe at 343-2211.
