The contrast to last year’s Emporia High preseason scrimmage at Welch Stadium was stark.
The general mood was better following Friday night’s scrimmage than the one a year ago, and after it was over, the Spartans locked shoulders and sang to their fans, similar to what they do after home victories. Coach Bill Lowe was also upbeat this time around. Perhaps most importantly, no injuries were reported at the end.
“I thought it went real well,” said Lowe, who helped coach the Away side of the scrimmage, which lost 16-13 to the Home squad. “It was real competitive. We split (the teams) up pretty even, and I thought we got some good work out of it.”
