The Greensburg Hospital Auxiliary will be receiving some extra help from Emporia’s Newman Regional Health Hospital Auxiliary as a result of money raised from the Great American Market two years ago.
The Newman Hospital Auxiliary will present a check for $1,278 to Greensburg’s auxiliary on Sept. 8. Sarah Mounkes, Newman auxiliary president, said the auxiliary started hosting a booth at the Great American Market three years ago in downtown Emporia. The primary reason for the booth was to raise money for scholarships, but two years ago, the group decided to help out Greensburg’s auxiliary. Greensburg’s hospital is still rebuilding after a tornado destroyed it and much of the town on May 4, 2007.
The Newman Auxiliary raises money for a variety of things through the hospital’s gift shop, snack bar and a variety of fundraisers throughout the year. The money is used for medical scholarships, hospital needs and the needs of the auxiliary, Mounkes said. The auxiliary will have a booth in this year’s Great American Market, which is Sept. 12 in downtown Emporia. The hospital’s booth will be in front of Designs by Sharon, 703 Commercial St. There will be donated items and items from the hospital’s gift shop for sale. Money will be used for medical scholarships.
In addition to raising money, the auxiliary coordinates volunteer work at the hospital. Volunteers — young and old — are welcome. Mounkes said volunteer work can open a lot of doors for young people as well as people a sense of purpose and satisfaction by giving back to the community.
Volunteers are needed in the gift shop, the snack bar, information desks around the hospital, same-day surgery, and for the hospital’s Loving Arms program.
The Loving Arms program is an on-call position where volunteers are called in to sit with a sick child whose parents can’t be at the hospital or a child in need of care while a parent is being treated at the hospital. The program also is for adults needing company at the hospital as well.
Volunteers also do mail and flower delivery, office work, bake goods for the snack bar and can serve on the auxiliary board, which has about 22 members.
To apply for a volunteer position at the hospital, contact Katie Klausmeyer, auxiliary coordinator, at 343-6800, Ext. 2525.
Potential volunteers must fill out an application to volunteer at the hospital. Applications also may be filled out online at www.newmanrh.org.
