Main Street collects for care package
Friday, August 28, 2009
Members of Emporia Main Street are collecting items to send overseas to Steve Harmon, a longtime volunteer for the organization.
Harmon recently was deployed to Afghanistan. Items for the care package may be taken to Town Crier Bookstore or the Main Street office. Items suggested by Harmon’s wife, Amy, include: letters, news, beef jerky, movies, music and disposable heat pads — “Doan's that can be used for achy back or pain except he uses it for the upcoming winter months to keep warm,” wrote Becky Smith in a letter to members.
“Even something purchased from another business but you feel Steve (or one of the men/women he is serving with) would enjoy would be appreciated,” Smith wrote.
Main Street will package the items and be responsible for shipping. For questions, or if something needs to be picked up, call Smith at 343-9649.

Got this message forwarded from Steve:
Saw a rather humbling care package article in the gazette. If anyone
asks about care package items please let them know that I share these
items with our team not just for me. Also we have tons of
dental/hygiene bathroom supplies and I don't want those to go to waste.
Here is a list of things guys really like:
- Any magazines, newspapers, reminders of Kansas
- DVD's of taped TV (anything - I have seen a lot of people
are using their TIVO's to record shows and just sending DVD's
- Snacks, junk food anything like that is hard to get around
here.
- Blank cd's -- the most precious commodity on post right now.
- Paper: Believe it or not copy paper is really hard to find
here...
That's really about it. Tell Becky thank you. I am uncomfortable
getting things but am also very appreciative.
