Gardeners
Billy Malone and Erin Sudlow each were recipients of $600 scholarships awarded by the Emporia Gardeners of America. Malone and Sudlow, junior students at Kansas State University in Manhattan, were interns this summer. Malone worked for a Topeka landscape business, and Sudlow interned with Pioneer Seed Co.
The EGOA club voted to give a donation of $200 to the Founding City of Veteran’s Day signs at the entrances to Emporia. Bill Hanlon spoke at the July meeting about organic gardening and community gardens and the benefits of local gardening. Members and guests then were given a tour of the yard at the home of Gilbert and Rita Louk.
Sertoma
Recent speakers at the Sertoma Club were Jamie Sauder, Ken Theel and Jack and Mary Melhorn, introduced by members, Bill McCord, Wayne Theel and Walter Spencer. Members Warren Brown and Jake Edmunds were recognized and thanked for their work in putting together the Sertoma float in the Fourth of July parade. The float held the miniature train engine and a flag display.
The 2009-10 officers of the Sertoma Club of Emporia are: Shawn Parks, president; Ron Dinkel, president elect and newsletter editor; Mary Wade, 1st vice president; Gene Graber, 2nd vice president; Elton Jensen, 3rd vice president; Ulli Wallace, secretary; Les Nuessen, treasurer; Warren Brown, sergeant-at-arms; Bob Hush, chairman of the board. Members of the board of directors are Charles Wilhite, Mar Jean Anderson, Billy Christian and Russell Beck, three years; Petty Ott, Glenn Boyce and Jim Stolfus, two years; and Warren Brown and Cora Brown, one year.
Optimist
Recent speakers at the Flint Hills Optimist Club have included Bev Kerbs, donor recruitment representative for the American Red Cross who has worked with the Red Cross blood program for eight years and arranges for the Bloodmobile stops in various cities, including Emporia. Other speakers were Matthew Fowler, Kathy Butcher, Prue Schmidt and Ciara Currie, who attended the American Legion Girls’ State. Speaker sponsors included Mike Alpers, Rich Jaggard, Ken Hanson and Rick Buck. It was announced that the annual Flint Hills Optimist Club and Chris Cakes Pancake Feed will be held Oct. 10 at the National Guard Armory.
Knights
Officers recently installed for Emporia’s Leo Council 727 of the Knights of Columbus for the 2009-10 fraternal year are: Fred Gaede, grand knight; Tim Helmer, deputy grand knight; Dan Vehige, chancellor; Dan Schneider, recorder; Dan Scheller, treasurer; Rick Moore, advocate; Pat Buck, warden; guards - Marvin Brown (outside) and Farley Wright (inside); Richard Haag, financial secretary; Carl Antes, three-year trustee; Bill Brooks, two-year trustee; Vince Hammerl, one-year trustee; Marvin Tajchman, lecturer; the Rev. Richard Warsnak, chaplain.
