Sharing their passion

Saturday, August 15, 2009

Last week, another memorable fair came to an end. Did you notice anything different or did anything stand out about The Gazette’s fair coverage this year?

If you said the photos, you are right. This year, Gazette photographers Michael Dakota and Larry Caldwell shot hundreds of pictures documenting the fair, and they created some amazing photographs.

There is a difference between someone who has a point-and-shoot camera and a professional photographer. These two photographers are pros and we hope that you noticed the difference.

Over the years, we have watched many photographers shoot the fair. But we enjoyed watching these guys come up with interesting angles to make ordinary pictures look extraordinary.

At the Gazette, we feel fortunate to have not just one, but two talented shooters on staff. They both bring serious experience to the job, and they have the equipment, knowledge and passion to capture Emporia’s amazing moments.

Michael has been in the business for 23 years. Larry has been in the business professionally since 1972, but he did say that he got his first byline in a paper when he was 10. Without a doubt, these guys could be at much larger operations making sizeable sums of money.

But these guys are purists. They enjoy capturing the small moments in life in rural America, and they have chosen to spend their time in our community.

During the fair, Michael and Larry shot hundreds of pictures. Although not every one made it into the printed Gazette, they were loaded to our reprint site. To order copies of the fair photos, go to http://www.emporiagazette.com/reprint.

If you like the photographers’ work, don’t hesitate to tell them when you see them out and about shooting. The sports season is coming and we bet our photographers are going to get some amazing pictures of the action.

We hope you enjoy looking at Emporia through the eyes of these guys.
