Flint Hills Beef Fest events dominate this weekend’s activities in the Emporia area, with only a few offerings not related to the festival.
Today
• 6 p.m. — Ranch feed
• 7 p.m. — Ranch rodeo
• 8 p.m. — Blues & Barbecue Band “Runskinquartet”
Saturday
• 9 a.m. — Judging of cattle (at Emporia Livestock Sales)
• 9:30 a.m. to noon — Solar cooking demonstration, including bread baked in a bathtub, by John Crisp, Farmers Market, Seventh Avenue and Merchant Street.
• 10 a.m. — Ranch horse competition
• 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. — Pony wagon rides and National Guard climbing wall
• 10 a.m. — Registration kids tractor pull
• 11 a.m. — Kids tractor pull
• 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. — Free hamburgers and Cokes (while supplies last)
• 1 p .m. — Cow chip toss and catch
• 2:30 p.m. — Barbecue awards
• 5:30 p.m. — Awards banquet
• 6:30 p.m. — Steak dinner
• 7:30 p.m. — Hypnotist Erick Kand
• 9 p.m. to 12 a.m. — Dance to “Old Skool”
Sunday
• 8:30 a.m. — Golf tournament (Emporia Municipal Golf Course)
• 10 a.m. — Team roping (Rain location will be Hatcher Arena)
Tickets for Friday evening Beef Fest cost $10 for adults and $5 for children. Saturday evening Beef Fest tickets cost $30 and can be purchased in advance only at Emporia Veterinary Hospital, 710 Anderson; Jim’s Cowboy Shop, 312 Commercial St.; and Frontier Farm Credit, 1221 E. 12th Ave.
• The Pooch Plunge will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the aquatic center. The cost is $7 if pre-registered through the Emporia Recreation Commission and $10 at the door. There will be many activities at the plunge including a talent show, microchipping and give-aways. Microchips are $25 and may be obtained by cash and check only. The event is sponsored by the Emporia Recreation Commission with proceeds benefiting the H. Dale Buck Fund.
• Winding Road Equine Rescue & Retirement will have a fundraising event at 1 p.m. Sunday at the FlintHills Mall. Pony rides will be $2. There also will be a “Hand to Heart, Heart to Horse” painting event. For $1 people can place their hand prints on Frank or Ripley to show their love for horses. Winding Road Equine Rescue & Retirement provides a safe haven for retired and rescue horses.
