Friday Thoughts is a light-hearted commentary.
A POPULAR EVENT at the Lyon County Fair is the livestock sale. People like to purchase the hogs, cattle and other animals that the 4-H kids raise. I noticed that Dr. Steve Haught purchased the grand champion bunny.
Knowing that people like to purchase animals at the sale to eat — I hesitantly asked the newsroom, “Do people actually eat bunnies?” I heard a resounding yes. I was informed that it tastes like chicken and it’s a delicacy in France. I feel a bit foolish for not knowing that eating bunnies is such common knowledge. Perhaps I was not aware of it because you can’t find it in grocery stores nor do area restaurants have it on their menus.
We want to congratulate Dr. Haught and everyone else who purchased animals at the fair because it helps the 4-H kids. But if you see Dr. Haught you might ask him what will become of his grand champion bunny: will it be an office mascot, a pet for home or will “Peter Cottontail” become a tasty dinner?

Not just France, either -- rabbit is popular in both England and Germany (ever hear of hassenfeffer?). I'll be curious to see what Dr. Haught says; knowing him, it'll probably be suitably tongue-in-cheek.

Rabbit is popular here too. You can buy domestic rabbit fryers from a place in Cottonwood Falls, all dressed and ready for the skillet. There's a seller here in Emporia too. A very dense meat, yes indeed, rabbit is good eats, one of the most nutritious meats. And many Chinese dishes are made from rabbit too.
Bon appetit lapin.

Darn right,create- good eats! Grandma even told me about rabbit drives they used to have around here. They would dress them and pack them in barrels with ice to put on the train to Kansas City.

maybe I can get Chris to go rabbit hunting with me this winter.
tracking those wascaly wabbits is a lot of fun. I could invite my old hunting buddy, Dick Cheney.
What do you think Chris?

Well Steve, the only advice I can give is, if you are inviting Cheney to the hunt, body armor had better be the mandatory dress code of the day !

Rabbit is a white meat and won't clog your arteries like steak will. One country famous for their rabbit recipes is France, and France is not a third world country.

Last I knew neither were England and Germany. (to add to create's post) Maybe, I don't know what a rabbit actually looks like. or Maybe, I've been lied to all my life and don't don't live almost smack in the middle of "America". I was under the impression that those little, furry things that run in front of my vehicle, almost daily, on my way to and from work were infact rabbits. ?! Just trying to add some humor.

LOL Weltha. Me too. My family ate lots of things that didn't come from the grocery store. Lobster straight off the ocean floor, fish you've speared yourself and cooked right on the beach. Squid! Yum!!!
