June Bug benefit softball tournament

The third annual June Bug Cancer Foundation Coed Softball Tournament will be Aug. 21-22 at Trusler Sports Complex. All proceeds benefit the June Bug Cancer Foundation, a nonprofit organization that assists cancer patients with expenses not normally covered under their health plan.

The entry deadline is Friday. The entry fee of $150 includes free beer on Aug. 21 and tickets for prizes and giveaways. The winning team will receive tournament T-shirts. Sponsors may place their name on the tournament T-shirt for $100. The event’s major sponsors are Central Care Cancer Center, Dr. Tim Harris, Applebee’s, Crown Distributors and KISS 103.1 FM.

Twilight 5,000

The Twilight 5,000 Road Race and Fitness Run/Walk is 7:45 p.m. Saturday at the Flinthills Mall in Emporia. The race is sponsored by the Emporia State cross country team. The entry fee is $16.

Participants will receive a T-shirt. The top three winners in each class (men and women) will receive Adidas apparel. For more information, call ESU cross country coach Dave Harris at 341-5938, or e-mail Harris at dharris@emporia.edu.

ERC activities

The Emporia Recreation Center is offering the following upcoming sports activities:

• Adult fall softball at Trusler Sports Complex. Leagues: Monday Men, Tuesday Coed, Wednesday 35 & Over, Thursday Men and Friday Coed. Fee $175 for eight games. Registration deadline Aug. 21. Schedules will be released Aug. 26.

• Adult coed kickball at Peter Pan Park. Games on Sunday evenings beginning Sept. 6. Teams of 10 on the field at one time, with five men and five women. Fee $100 for eight games. Registration deadline Aug. 28.

• 3rd-6th grade flag football at Santa Fe Park beginning Sept. 7. Third and fourth grades meet Mondays and Wednesdays at 5:30; fifth and sixth grades meet Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:15. Game times will be at 5:30, 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. Fee $16 for residents, $18 for nonresidents. Registration deadline Sept. 4.

• 1st and 2nd grade instructional flag football at Santa Fe Park. Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Sept. 8 at 5:30 p.m. Fee is $14 for residents, $16 for nonresidents. Registration deadline Sept. 4.

• NFL Punt, Pass & Kick at Santa Fe Park at 7 p.m. Sept. 17. Open to boys and girls ages 8 to 15 as of Dec. 31, 2009, with boys and girls divisions. Event will be based on distance and accuracy. Entry is free.

5K Run/Walk

Admire United Methodist Church is sponsoring a 5K run/walk scheduled for Sept. 19. Proceeds will be used for school supplies for Admire Elementary School.

Entry into the event is $15 and includes a T-shirt. Participants age 11 and under will be entered for free but will not receive a T-shirt. The registration deadline is Sept. 6.

Registration will be at Admire's Jones Park Shelter House begining at 7:40 a.m., with a start time of 8 a.m. Breakfast will be served at the church from 7 to 10 a.m., with pancakes, sausage, eggs, fresh fruit and drinks. The twilight run attracted 47 runners from all over the state and even a few from out of state. Nice job ESU CC team!
