North Lyon County students return to school Thursday. Today, Superintendent Mike Nulton, who took over the reins this summer, talks about the upcoming school year.
Q Are the schools and teachers ready for the new school year?
A The teachers are ready, but the storm yesterday created some challenges at (Northern Heights High School). It will not delay the start of school, but we will not have air conditioning in some areas and we will have to contend with the distraction of some facility repairs over the next few weeks.
Q School assessment scores have been good for the district. What will the district do to see that continue?
A We will continue to use the state assessment scores and other academic measures to evaluate and improve our curriculum. I believe our building leadership and the teachers have become very adept with this process and will continue to make improvements that will result in improved learning.
Q What do you think will happen with No Child Left Behind under the Obama administration?
A Every administration wants to put their own stamp on education, so we will probably see some changes. However, I think NCLB will be with us, at least for the foreseeable future.
Q What are the school budgets like for this year?
A Like most schools, we have been forced to maximize local revenue sources to help offset the decrease in funding from the state. Even with the severe budget cuts that we made last year, our overall financial resources are down compared to last year.
Q What advice do you have for the students coming into the district?
A Take advantage of the opportunities that present themselves, both academic and activity based. Involvement in activities has always been a key indicator of future success.
Q Are there any major changes for this school year?
A Other than new district leadership, there are very few new faces in USD 251. This will be a learning and observing year for me, and any major changes will come later after I’ve developed an understanding of the district.
Q What is enrollment looking like for this year?
A Enrollment is down, but not more than we predicted. Our FTE today is right at 500.
Q Is the district considering shutting any schools down in light of budget cuts?
A This topic has not been discussed by the board of eduction since I’ve been in the district, nor am I aware that it has ever been discussed at this level.
Q Is there anything else you’d like to share?
A I’m looking forward to a great year at North Lyon County schools. In spite of the current economic situation, I know this district has great teachers and they will do everything possible to ensure that our students have successful futures.
