An obedience course for dogs and their handlers is scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays from Sept. 22 through Oct. 22, according to Judy Dieker, executive director of the Humane Society of the Flint Hills.
Eileen Holland will be the instructor for the classes, which will begin at 6 p.m. in Hammond Park.
Pre-registration is required and may be made by calling 342-4477. The total cost of the course is $25, and class size is limited.
Holland is an experienced obedience instructor and has used several different dogs to qualify for American Kennel Club degrees. Both of her demonstration dogs for the obedience classes have been adopted from shelters, Dieker said.
Each participant will need to bring a dog, a choke or training collar and a six- or eight-foot leash. Leashes should not be retractable nor made of chain.
The training collars, however, are made of chain and often are called a “slip collar.”
Participants also may bring dog treats in baggies that can be slipped into a pocket or fanny pack. Dog handlers also need to bring baggies to remove excrement.
Dieker said dogs need to be up-to-date on vaccinations and flea treatments.
“When you first come to class ... keep your dog from getting near other dogs,” Dieker said. “No sniffing others. You never know who will be grouchy.”
