Community health center celebrated

Wednesday, August 12, 2009

Safety net health clinics like Flint Hills Community Health Center are crucial in bad economic times.

Flint Hills Community Health Center celebrated National Community Health Center Week and Kansas Primary Care Safety Net Clinic Week Tuesday afternoon.

Cathy Harding of the Kansas Association for the Medically Underserved spoke at the event during the noon hour on Tuesday. Harding said in these economic times people need a place to go for health care. Harding puts the Flint Hills Community Health Center at one of the top three health care centers of the 39 health clinics the Kansas Association for the Medically Underserved represents.

“It’s always been outstanding,” Harding said, adding that all the services at the health center are outstanding.

Harding said the Flint Hills Community Health Center stands out for several reasons including the comprehensiveness of care which includes the dental, medical and mental health services under one roof.

“They’re always on the cutting edge here,” she said.

Harding said the health center is active on a state level and has strong leadership.

“They’re always looking at the next thing to tackle,” she said.

Harding also talked about the Emporia area legislators, Don Hill, Peggy Mast and Jim Barnett.

“(We’re) so fortunate to have leadership in the top that we have here,” Harding said.

Sen. Barnett spoke at about the challenges that health care is facing.

“It’s the civil discourse and the effort of working together that we’ll continue to solve problems,” he said. “The answers are not going to be Republican or Democrat.”

Barnett said all the legislators try to represent the health care industry in Emporia.

“We all try to represent you in Topeka,” he said. “At the very ground level you are the ones working to provide services to those in need.”

Darn tootin it won't be Dems and Reps fixing the health care. Too many of these politicos are bought off by the pharma and insurance lobbiests!!! That's who they seem to represent!
