A 16-year-old Vassar girl died Tuesday morning in a two-vehicle accident at the junction of U.S. Highway 75 and Kansas Highway 268, about two miles north of Lyndon in Osage County.
The accident happened about 9:35 a.m., according to a report from the Kansas Highway Patrol.
The KHP account of the crash stated that Kerensa Kaye Ward, 16, of Vassar, was driving west on K-268 and had stopped at a stop sign at the intersection before she began to drive onto U.S. 75.
She apparently failed to yield to northbound traffic and was struck by another vehicle on the driver’s side of the 1992 Chevrolet she was driving, according to the KHP report.
A passenger in the vehicle, Danica C. Barone, 15, of Lyndon, was taken for treatment to Stormont-Vail HealthCare in Topeka.
Both girls were wearing safety restraints.
The driver of the second vehicle, William Evans Meade, 51, of Melvern, and a passenger, Turner E. Meade II, 14, of Melvern, both were taken to Stormont-Vail for treatment of unspecified injuries. Both were wearing safety restraints.
William Meade was driving a 1992 Ford pickup and was towing a car on a trailer behind the truck.
