No gym memberships

Monday, August 10, 2009

AFTER READING THE county is considering using taxpayer’s money to pay for gym memberships or equipment, I knew I had to write my thoughts.

When did we as taxpayers become our employee’s conscience? They, just like the rest of our citizenry, are capable and able to exercise on their own time.

I understand being proactive helps with health care costs, and I’m sure if we poll other places of work, they also would like to have their fees paid by someone else. The courthouse employees have a gym at their place of work. Try taking the stairs instead of the elevator or taking a walk up and down Commercial on city sidewalks. You could even walk clear up Commercial and take a look at a useless clock to check how long it took you to walk up there. Those of us in the county don’t have the luxury of sidewalks.

At a time of financial crisis and county department heads being asked to trim their budgets, now is not the time to pay for something so frivolous as gym fees for county employees.

So I ask our county commissioners to table this issue or better yet, throw it in the trash.

I agree. Trash it. Should not even be wasting time discussing this issue. My company does not pay for my gym membership, so why should a government employee get that luxury and I end up not only paying for my own gym membership but for theirs as well.

Something is seriously wrong when the best jobs around are working for the government!

What an insult to the taxpayers for this to even be considered. It should be dropped immediately without chance for later reconsideration. I can't believe the commissioners spent any time even discussing this.

Very good editorial, Camilla. Thank you for writing it.
