Graham takes top honor at fair

Saturday, August 8, 2009

The Anderson Building on the Lyon County Fairgrounds was buzzing Friday morning as exhibitors were collecting their exhibits at the close of the Lyon County Fair.

The Anderson Building closed to the public Thursday evening as only a couple of events remained for the fair.

The fair closes this evening with the annual Demolition Derby.

Tracey Graham is this year’s Adult Open Class Exhibitor of the Year.

This is her second time receiving the honor — the last time was in 2007. And with more than 50 entries this year and numerous blue ribbons, the honor was well-deserved. Graham entered canned goods, flowers, knitting, spinning, crochet and several other items.

“Knitting is my biggest passion,” Graham said.

A multi-colored shawl, soft to the touch, lay among a table full of items that Graham made. Graham spun the yarn and dyed it herself. She learned how to spin about 2 1/2 years ago, and she taught herself to knit about nine years ago with a book.

“Knitting is my favorite thing,” she said. “I love spinning, too.”

Graham said she started canning last October and enjoys the fruits of her labor for many months to come.

“I love having all the canned stuff so in February when it’s cold I still have the taste of summer,” she said.

Making things to put on exhibit at the fair isn’t work for Graham because she loves it so much, she said.

“I just like participating in stuff and showing things,” she said. “I’ve always admired what other people do. I love doing a wide variety of things. I just love the fair. It’s fun and not really work.”
