Quit spending

ONCE AGAIN, THIS town wants to waste money on something useless.
Why would anybody want to stop at this visitor’s center to walk on a walking trail, look at grass and flowers and a babbling brook? People coming south on the Turnpike are going to stop at McDonald’s 20 minutes away. People coming from the north are going to stop at McDonald’s five minutes away to stop, walk, eat and use the restroom. Nobody’s going to stop and look at our visitor’s center.
With the city having budget problems with the water and sewer, what are we going to do — have the visitors pay for using the water fountains and bathrooms at this Center? And who’s going to do the upkeep on this center? The city’s already asking for volunteers to care for the flowers planted throughout the city.
Emporia leaders — quit spending money! I’m going broke trying to bring people into town to make business owners rich.

Good point, and having just posted this on another comment page, let's talk about the city MAKING money instead of spending it...
Laws such as using ones turn indicator, no U-turns, no jaywalking, etc. are examples of good laws which were originally set to protect the citizenry and are now virtually ignored. But in addition this is a perfect opportunity for the city (and County) to generate funds by a perfectly legitimate method. If you choose to ignore the law you’re going to pay for it.
Wichita got tired of speeders on Kellogg and issued over 1,300 citations in July, resulting in an influx of cash to the city coffers in excess of 135,000. However, in Emporia it is apparently it is easier to raise sales and property tax than to simply enforce the law.
For the past two or more years it has been illegal to drive in Kansas with one’s windshield wipers on without running your headlights as well. During our last rainy period we counted over 300 violators in a matter of minutes on a drive down 6th from west to east.
The law was made to make us all safer. If scofflaws choose to ignore it the city should tap them as the goldmine that they are…and give the rest of us a break on raising our taxes again.

Dateline Emporia 1875...pundents prevail and refuse to support taxes for safe drinking water or sewer services. They say what was good for their grandpa is good for the hoity-toity folks living on the east side of town. Since the railroad came in everybody thinks we have to be an Topekee or something. Before long those know-it-all folks from Ople will be trying to tells us all how to live!
We hear that we don't need no gravel on main street as the cattle manure and mud mixes together good enough to keep the dust down and whose damn idea was it to restrict the whores in the saloon until after 10pm? Man can't have a damn smoke, and drink and a lap sittn without the damn do gooders EFD (Emporians for Decency) trying to horn in on all the fun.
And just because Clem Hawkin's pig shed burned down is no need to be starting up some high falutin volunteer fire department. The bucket brigade does just fine.
And it goes on and on... everything is relative folks

I read a suggestion in there. It was quit spending money. Obviously this doesn't mean quit spending all together. Common sense tells me that this means that times are tough and all spending should be done responsibly, just the essentials for a while. Since having kids this is what I have to do(over eight years now), it's life in the real world. For me, no cable or satellite, no cell phone, no long distance on my phone(I use pre-paid calling cards when necessary), I drive "clunkers"(paid for) that I won't be trading in for a car payment(I get good gas mileage and help the environment and my health by riding my bicycle when ever the weather permits which is about 3/4 of the year). This is not to say that the occasional luxury is completely out, I just prioritize and weigh whether it is worth it or not. Obviously internet is worth it to me. So what I guess I'm trying to say is that responsible thoughtful spending can be done and that is what a lot of us are asking for. Perhaps now it will be more clear how "quit spending" is a valid suggestion.
Thank you for your time.
