EDITOR’S NOTE: Each Friday, The Gazette salutes those who make Emporia and the surrounding area a better place to live and work. The following folks deserve a pat on the back ...
JODIE LIESS who was named a 2009 Outstanding Recent Graduate by Emporia State University. She will be honored during homecoming weekend.
• Mike Strickland who was selected to take over the Emporia High softball team. He replaces Ray Owens who retired after eight seasons.
• Beau Welch who was selected to be Emporia High’s new baseball coach. He has been an assistant for the program for three years.
• Troy Ross who drove his 1969 Nova to a win in the Pro ET class at the Heartland Park dragstrip. This was his third win of the year.
• Emporia Main Street, which hosted training for Main Street organizations across the state. The event brought 115 people to town.
• Ashish Patel who reopened the gas station at 2900 Eaglecrest Drive. The Shell station will now be called Chief’s Corner.
• The fifth grade Jr. Spartans who won the Manhattan MAYB basketball tournament. Players included Max Brown, Seth Tilton, Tate Demler, Jake Smith, Bryce Crouch and Isaac Ortega. They were coached by Anthony Markowitz.
