Meet a Gazette Mom

Friday, August 7, 2009

Norma Poersch

Age: 32

Location: Emporia

Occupation: Mother, wife, Spanish interpreter, orthodontic assistant

Family members: Husband Ben, 35; Gabriel, 10; Daphne, 7; Johanna, 2

The last time my children made me laugh: Almost every day, especially now that my 2-year-old daughter is at the age where she is learning to express herself and I am starting to see her personality come through.

The last time I made my children laugh: Tonight all three of the children were trying to talk to me at the same time and it was so much all at once I threw myself on the floor, and they all three jumped on me laughing and talking even faster.

I carve out time for myself by: I don’t really get time to myself unless my husband is home and that allows me to go out and run errands while he stays with the kids.

The television mom I’m most like: Not really sure. I’m not real big into watching much television, and the TV moms that have made the news lately aren’t what I would call positive role models for anyone.

The hardest thing about being a mom: Probably watching my children growing up and having to balance love with discipline and still be fair especially when they are all three individuals and are all different in the sense that they each respond in different ways. Sometimes I wish each one came with their own user’s manual.

The most fun thing about being a mom: Seeing how excited my children are to see me when I get home from work and talking with them about their day and sharing in their day.

The most important life lesson I want my children to learn: To preserve themselves and use wise decisions, always respect other people regardless of religion or race and to always maintain their faith in God.

The invention I wish I could create to make my life easier: A robot that immediately knows where my children’s shoes are when I’m trying to walk out the door and realize they are barefoot.

My proudest moment as a parent: When my babies finally learned to walk, when they were potty trained, when they learned to ride their bikes without training wheels and seeing the expression on their faces when they realized they were doing it on their own and I knew I helped them get to that achievement.

The way I encourage green habits in my kids: We actively recycle, and the kids participate and understand why we do it.

I get my kids to eat their fruits and vegetables by: Our kids actually love to eat them; they’ve always been a regular part of our diet, and I think they’d be happy vegetarians if we let them!

My favorite kitchen gadget: My Pampered Chef food chopper — I own two of them.

Favorite way to slow down as a family: Put on a good movie and pop some popcorn.

I hope my kids inherit my: Self-confidence, good work ethic, responsibility and a well-timed sense of humor.

The kid’s snack I am most likely to be caught eating: Chocolate chip cookies!

Three items on my “bucket list” are: Go to Europe; see all of my children be successful, educated and secure.

My most embarrassing parenting moment: Our first child burped very loudly a second after the last refrain ended of the national anthem sung in a large church. It actually echoed.

The future parenting moment I fear the most: Hands down, driver’s licenses!

The biggest challenge I’ve faced as a parent is: Scheduling — trying to be three places at once. Field day at school, recitals, music lessons, etc.

The best thing money can’t buy is: Your children’s love and respect.

If I had an “I’d rather be...” bumper sticker on my car, it would say: “I’d rather be on vacation in Arizona.”

The best thing about the beginning of the school year is: Lunch dates with my husband without the kids.
