Ludicrous situation

MR. WALKER, thank you for your enlightened editorial about the criminal charges and arrest of a local concrete contractor.
Many of us in the construction business are wondering the same things. Why was the street work approved to be poured? Why was the bill paid if the work was unsatisfactory? Why, after the error was discovered, was the contractor not given a chance to explain his actions and to make restitution if deemed incorrect? In most business dealings, if a customer has a question about a bill, he or she contacts the billing department and, after discussion, it is resolved. We have never heard of a customer approving the work, paying the bill and then, three years later, filing criminal charges for false claims and theft! It is ludicrous that the “customer” in this case is the city government. It is unconscionable that this has happened to a reputable businessman with a family. It is our hope that in the future, cooler heads will prevail. John & Carol Schaefer Emporia
