ESU president joins Renaissance group

Thursday, August 6, 2009

A national organization committed to improving and reforming education now has Emporia State University’s president as one of its leaders. Dr. Michael R. Lane was elected to the Board of Governors of The Renaissance Group (TRG), a national consortium of colleges and universities. One of five TRG members elected, Lane will serve a three year term on the board.

The Renaissance Group (education.csufresno.edu/rengroup) works on issues dealing with teacher preparation, promoting exemplary practices, partnerships and leadership that ensure high levels of teaching and learning for schools.

“I’m honored by being selected because I feel The Renaissance Group’s goals go hand-in-hand with what The Teachers College at Emporia State University has been so successful at achieving,” said Lane.

In addition to serving as Emporia State University’s 15th president, Lane is a member of Rep. Jerry Moran’s Executive Committee and the Advisory Committee for Science, Technology and the Future. He recently completed a term as a member of the Math and Science Education Advisory Committee to the Kansas Legislature.

Lane is currently a member of the Kansas Park Trust, Steering Committee for the Visitors Center at the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, and is a member of the Kansas Educational Leadership Commission’s Administrative Evaluation Design Team. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Kansas Business Hall of Fame, the Regional Development Association of East Central Kansas and the National Teachers Hall of Fame. He is a member of the Kansas Cavalry, Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club of Emporia.

the best way to improve and reform education is to devote classes on promoting limited goverment and the practice of virtuous citizenship. the very future of american liberty and prosperity depend on it. for example. take a look at this cash for clunkers program, this is absolutly unbelieveable. according to glen beck this program is a scam to get complete access to your computer. my friend go to utube glen beck cash for clunkers and play the video. after you view it, you might want to build a wall around the beltway instead of the border. one class i would highly recommend is a class called, there is no such thing as a free lunch. please do not laugh because, i am as serious as a heart a tack. i am very concerned about the future of liberty in the united states. my fear is the freedoms we all take for granted now will be dismantled in our lifetime. the number one thing wrong with education is moral decay. long gone are the days when higher education in america was marked by an attachment to a body of truth that sustained an accepted moral order. its no wonder wall street took a bath, these folks had no scruples.

It is painfully clear our education system has failed in a number of venues for some time apparently. Especially spelling and grammar.

dont look back, something may be gaining on you. this is just the facts. i like reddog rednick bloging, there has been more inflation in higher education than anything except maybe pro golf. in 1963, 16 hours of credit at esu cost 75 dollars. what are these kids learning in school? let me give you some examples. a racist new york professor referred to jews as a [race of skunks.] a rhode island professor who interrupted a lecture to single out a christian student in order to deride him in front of the class for his beliefs. the tenured academic at a boston university who classifies the 9/11 terrorists as freedom fighters who were completly justified in their attacks on [the great satan.] the communist party member who teaches his students at a new york university that the objective history of our countrymust be [deconstructed.] the former leader of an avowed terrorist group responsible for 30 bombings is a distinguished professor of education at an illinois university despite the fact he shows no remorse for his crimes. the sad truth is that most college and university students are indoctrinated with an endless barrage of moral relativism and taught to march in lockstep alongside clueless academics with an axe to grind. nuff said.

Out of one huge sea of college professors, reddog, you have named a few droplets with whom you disagree. At the same time you say "most" students are indoctrinated with an endless barrage blah blah blah...Are you taking all those classes so you can make such a blanket statement? Classic argumentation doesn't allow for that.

It is obvious that you are angry at somebody for something. To indict all of academe, however, is incredible. Maybe it's today's cost of tuition. You've mentioned the difference between current tuition costs and that of 1963 on more than one thread. I can only ask about how much college professors earned in 1963. How much did you earn in 1963? How much did a new car cost in 1963? It's all relative.

You ask. "what are these kids learning in school?" I hope they are learning to think for themselves. Here's what one of my profs said to my class one day and I never forgot it: If you want to learn how to do something specific, go to a trade school; you're here to learn how to think about what is being taught, to weigh differences and similarities, and to make decisions for yourself.

Most of my friends are college graduates. I don't know one who marches in lockstep with anyone.

I must agree with justthefacts about the failure of our education system with regard to spelling and grammar.

the best education for our young people is a college that teaches the time honored judo christian tradition, the history of western civilization, the merits of the free market, the precepts of limited government, and an unapologetic belief in the leadership role of the united states.
