Changes?

Thursday, August 6, 2009

Just what is the law in Emporia concerning turn signals? I do not see people using them when turning corners and changing lines.

And today I saw a, Emporia police car make right turn. And he did not use his turn signals .

Maybe I am just behind times? Has the law changed?

I to have witnessed this many times with drivers around town, including our police officers. I am sure it is still considered an illegal lane change when not using your turn signal, besides being down right inconsiderate of others.

My husband got a $120 ticket for this violation. He said the kicker was that the officer pulling him over didn't use his when he turned to pull him over.

I myself find it totally irritating to pull up behind someone at a light, then when the light changes they decide to let you know they are turning. Besides the ones who just don't use it period, are the ones who use it halfway through the turn, whatever good that does...

I hate it when drivers over react to me when I'm riding my bicycle like it's some strange new technology they have never seen before and they're all like "What's that!?!?" They don't know if they should slow down, speed up, swerve to miss me, swerve to hit me, throw something at me, or what. It's just a bike folks!
Don't get me started about people that don't turn in to the lane nearest to them on 6th, like it's that difficult to turn the wheel just a little bit more.

Blinkers will do more to prevent injuries than seatbelts, generally. If more people would signal, more people would know their intentions, and fewer vehicles would collide. Alas, though, all the grant money for special enforcement goes for seatbelts ... which can only help AFTER there is a wreck, while blinkers help prevent the wreck in the first place.
"Blink-it or Ticket", I say.

Even though another driver displays(maybe) a turn signal, never, ever trust that blinking light and commit yourself until you're *certain* of the path of the vehicle. But I agree that this place is the worst I've ever seen as far as non-compliance with signals.

I've seen the police in this town constantly break traffic laws. People have complained, and nothing gets done. They are allowed to break the laws I guess.

LMAO, some people must have no life at all,
People dont use turn signals, some drive with highbeams on, some honk to draw attention rather than use it for warning, some park in two spaces instead of one. Some ride bikes on the sidwalk and some jaywalk. I say dont sweat the small stuff, life is to short, try to enjoy the good things and let the little things go. by what do I know, I'm just One Voice

Anybody else on here every get hit by a car(it was actually a truck) while riding a bike? I think there was some sweat involved but I can promise you it wasn't small stuff. If you would like to experience what it's like first hand, someone's got a truck that I can barrow and I can provide the bike, all you have to do is bring yourself.

Shoot, there are so many people who don' t stop at stop signs, are busy texting and driving, talking on their cell phone and driving, fixing their hair or makeup while driving or destroying their and others ears with ear shattering sounds coming from their cars, they probably don't even know what a turn signal is or where to find it, let alone use it !

I agree Emporians seems pretty bad about not using turn signals. Of course, it helps when people pay attention. Once I almost turned into some fool. I was turning right onto Commercial from 6th. The light was red so I stopped (with signal on) and when I went to turn my passenger yelled wait. Some fool in a little car had driven down the parallel parking slots along 6th and was next to my SUV trying to turn right. I had to wait for him to turn so I could go. He went half a block and parked. I rolled the window down and told him to pay attention next time. I don't know who would have been ticketed for that fiasco if I'd hit him. Luckily, I didn't find out. I've had more people squeeze by on the right to turn where there's not a lane in this goofy town. I never see that in any other town I drive in.

I think that my point would be that there are a lot of arrogant and self centered people in this town. So a lot of that reflects in their driving. The problem with that is that their arrogance is dangerous, but apparently they feel that the rules don't apply to them.
These are the same people who will get mad and curse at the people who do follow the rules that somehow interferes with what they want to do.

Laws such as using ones turn indicator, no U-turns, no jaywalking, etc. are examples of good laws which were originally set to protect the citizenry and are now virtually ignored. But in addition this is a perfect opportunity for the city (and County) to generate funds by a perfectly legitimate method. If you choose to ignore the law you’re going to pay for it.

Wichita got tired of speeders on Kellogg and issued over 1,300 citations in July, resulting in an influx of cash to the city coffers in excess of 135,000. However, in Emporia it is apparently it is easier to raise sales and property tax than to simply enforce the law.

For the past two or more years it has been illegal to drive in Kansas with one’s windshield wipers on without running your headlights as well. During our last rainy period we counted over 300 violators in a matter of minutes on a drive down 6th from west to east.

The law was made to make us all safer. If scofflaws choose to ignore it the city should tap them as the goldmine that they are…and give the rest of us a break on raising our taxes again.

I recently called in two police officers parked illegally along the no parking zone at La Castitas Park. They were not on a call but standing at the concession drinking a soda. The dispatcher told me they were not in that area and would report it. Ha! Ha! I constantly see them speeding and breaking traffic laws...........Because they can!!!!!!!!

Why should we obey any laws? There are over 12 million people breaking our immigration laws and no one in our government seems to care. The people who can afford good lawyers break laws and go free so why should anyone obey any law that inconviences them?

just had to check back on this thread, I still see many are continuing to cry foul about other drivers, I would like to ask those a question, Do you really think the world revolves around you? I am not a perfect driver and I doubt any of you are either, There is no way anyone on this thread can make me believe that at some point they have not pissed off another driver by doing something stupid. Are some drivers better than others? yes. I just know my entire day isn't going to be ruined by someone not using a turn signal, jaywalking, taking two spaces, etc. Lighten up people, comments like the one above "there are a lot of arrogant and self centered people in this town" is true, I read thier comments on this site everyday!
Maybe you all could hold a citywide rally about turnsignal use and picket the courthouse, be sure to bring a pitchfork and torch!!
