PAT KELLEY HAS been a champion of SOS and the victims we support from our inception in 1983. As SOS has grown and thrived so has Pat’s support. SOS seeks to end sexual and domestic violence, child abuse and neglect through service, education, and advocacy.
Pat never missed an opportunity to bring attention, with the voice of reason, to either national or local events of individuals affected by violence; be it adult or child victims. He understood the concept of power and control versus anger management. He understood that adults have a sacred responsibility to protect children from strangers, but most importantly from the people they love and trust. He understood the need for systems to hold perpetrators of sexual and domestic violence, child abuse and neglect responsible for their actions. He understood that the world has a double standard for men and women; that the “boys will be boys” attitude should be challenged and eradicated.
While many disagreed with Pat’s editorials, SOS is eternally grateful for his wit, intelligence and due diligence in shining the light on topics that make people feel uncomfortable. Our work will be that much harder with Pat gone, as we have one less voice in editorials and comments on issues that are not going away soon enough. Pat would be proud to know that much of our work is shifting to prevention as we provide much more class time with children discussing bullying, safety, respect, conflict resolution, and healthy relationships — among other things.
Pat, we have not thanked you enough over the years for the power of your pen, but please know you are our hero and will be sorely missed by SOS. Farewell and THANK YOU for your kind attention.
