A 28-year-old man apparently hid in cornfields for about eight hours Tuesday morning before he was spotted by Lyon County Sheriff Gary Eichorn and taken into custody.
According to a report from Deputy James Baker, Robert Gilbert was arrested on suspicion of leaving the scene of an injury accident, failing to report an accident and driving while his license was suspended.
The incident began when a citizen reported the accident about 3:39 a.m. Tuesday morning at the intersection of Roads 135 and M.
Officers initiated a search for the driver of a Chevrolet pickup truck with major front-end damage that was found in the middle of the intersection.
The truck appeared to have hit a concrete culvert north of the intersection, and there were non-specified indications the driver had been injured, according to Baker’s report.
A resident nearby reported seeing a man running along Road 135, which prompted a search that involved sheriff’s officers and Emporia Fire Department personnel using a thermal imaging camera.
Eichorn contacted LifeTeam personnel, who volunteered to use their helicopter to aid in the search. Eichorn located Gilbert walking along Road 135, Baker said. Gilbert was taken into custody at 11:38 a.m. in the 1100 block of Road 135.
Baker said that Gilbert apparently had been hiding in cornfields in the area since the accident happened.
Gilbert remained in the Lyon County Jail this morning.
