Smaller animals

The Lyon County Fair went to the rabbits Monday as 4-H’ers eagerly showed their animals in the annual 4-H rabbit show.

Parents, judges and 4-H’ers crowded into the rabbit barn Monday morning for the show. Tufts of rabbit fur lay on the ground as 4-H’ers hurriedly groomed their animals to perfection hoping for the grand prize.

Katie Laws, 8, and her sister, Juli Laws, 10, were awaiting the show’s start Monday. Katie was holding Crissy, a Holland Lop rabbit. Katie said she likes showing rabbits.

“You can hold them and pet them,” Katie said, adding that Crissy was being showed for showmanship.

Katie also enjoys 4-H.

“You have lots of animals and you get ribbons,” she said.

Juli received grand champion for her Peking duck and was entering a rabbit in the show Monday. Juli said the duck that got grand champion this year is the offspring of the duck that her sister, Katie, showed last year and got grand champion for.

“I’m going to the state fair,” Juli said of her grand champion duck.

After the judging started, Grayce McAllister, 10, and Lakin Preisner, 12, were standing by their rabbits waiting to be judged.

“I like all the animals and projects,” Grayce said. “My favorite is rabbit, foods and goats. I like them all but those are my favorite.”

Lakin said her favorite 4-H categories are cat, dog and horse.

“I like all of them but they are kinda my favorite,” she said.

Kohl Prose, 10, has been in 4-H for four years, he said. He was showing Polish, sating and mini-lop rabbits Monday.

“There’s so many of them here and there’s a lot of competition,” Kohl said. “It’s a lot more exciting when you see your rabbit win over all of them.”

Kohl likes 4-H because it keeps him busy.

“It keeps you active,” he said. “You’re not at home and not bored. It keeps you busy and it’s just fun.”

When fair time comes and goes, it’s bittersweet for Kohl.

“You’re a little sad,” he said. “And a little bit happy that it’s over.”
