Media, coaches pick ESU to finish in same spot
as 2008
Kansas City, Mo. — The Emporia State football team finished in eighth place in the MIAA in 2008, and that’s exactly where the coaches and media predict the Hornets will finish in 2009.
Both preseason polls, released today at MIAA media day, have the Hornets picked to finish eighth, one spot behind Missouri Southern, which the Hornets tied last year with a 2-7 conference record.
Defending champion Northwest Missouri is picked to win the conference, followed by Pittsburg State and Central Missouri in both polls. The coaches have Washburn ranked fourth, while the media tabbed Nebraska-Omaha. UNO and Washburn are the only schools the coaches and media did not agree on. Missouri Western, the MIAA’s representative in the Mineral Water Bowl in 2008, is fifth in both polls.
Truman State and Fort Hays State rounded out the polls. Those two teams were Emporia State’s only conference wins a season ago.
The Hornets finished 4-7 overall last year. They return a majority of their starters on both sides of the ball, including quarterback Andre Sloan El and last year’s leading tackler, Katrel Larkins.
