The Emporia A-16 Blue team had to settle for a second-place finish in the Mid-States Class A Regional tournament, losing 6-1 to Ballwin (Mo.) Post 611 in the deciding championship game on Monday morning at Soden's Grove.
Ballwin scored four runs in the first inning, aided by two errors and a walk. Blues starter Matt Fry settled down after that, pitching four straight scoreless innings and at one point retiring nine straight batters, but the Blues couldn't get their offense going. They mustered seven hits against Ballwin starter Drue Bravo, who went the distance for the win. Emporia's only run came home on a sixth-inning double by Nate Flanagin. Ballwin added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to account for the final deficit.
