County library meeting; Foreign Officer luncheon

Saturday, August 1, 2009

County library meeting

Representatives from each of the public libraries in Lyon County will meet at 2:30 p.m. Aug. 8 at Lyon County District 1 in Allen. This is the correct time of the meeting; the incorrect time was published in Friday’s Gazette.

The agenda will include discussion of Lyon County funding, bookkeeping updates, Kansas library issues and other topics.

Members of the District Library Board have invited the boards and directors of the Emporia Public Library, the Elmendaro Township Library in Hartford and the Americus Township Library to attend the discussion meeting.

Foreign Officer luncheon

Approximately 115 military officers from more than 50 countries will be among the guests at a luncheon on Thursday, Aug. 6, at noon in American Legion Ball-McColm Post 5, 2921 W. 12th Ave.

American Legion members are invited to attend the luncheon at no charge, according to an announcement from past commander John Sanderson.

The Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth will be hosts for the luncheon.

The foreign officers, who are students at the General Staff College, are from countries that support the United States.

The group will visit the All-Veterans Memorial at 11:30 a.m., as part of a tour of Kansas that the Command and GSC conducts annually for the foreign officers.

A total of 67 members of the local Legion post have signed up to attend the luncheon, in addition to the guests. That participation has pushed the limit of Legion seating. Others who want to attend may call the Legion to have their names put on a waiting list, Sanderson said.
