Brightening the Corners

Saturday, August 1, 2009

The small garden plots that brighten the downtown area have brought compliments as abundant as the flowers and greenery that decorate them, according to information from Casey Woods, executive director of Emporia Main Street.

Main Street initiated the floral project by encouraging individuals and groups to adopt a garden, plant and maintain it throughout the season, with gift cards offered as rewards to the three top gardens.

“The community is the big winner here,” Woods said in announcing the winners. “You can’t believe the comments we are getting about how much better the community looks because we have fantastic volunteers that have chosen to adopt a downtown garden.”

Woods sees great benefit in sprucing up the downtown area.

“I just had someone tell me yesterday that the gardens, and what they represent in the way of community involvement and caring, impacted their decision to move to Emporia from Hutchinson,” he said.

The gift cards given out as prizes were donated by Main Street members — Sutherlands, Mark II, and Waters True Value.

Nina West of Toad Hollow Day Lily and Iris Farm judged the contest.

“The community is the big winner here,”

Another example of volunteer sweat equity trying to help make Emporia a more pleasant place to live @ no cost to the taxpayer.

There are still more gardens available to adopt, you can contact Casey @ Main Street.

Anything that improves the look of the old town......and doesn't cost the taxpayers more money is a good thing.....especially when its aimed at that part of town south of 12th and east of Prarie. Good Job to everybody involved.
