Newberg honored Seniors are named at ESU

Thursday, April 30, 2009

Emporia State University’s 2009 Dwight and Ida Curry Newberg Seniors have been named. Taylor Relph of Wichita, a communication major, was named Outstanding Senior, and Michelle Hernandez of Kingman, a business administration major, was named Distinguished Senior.

“Taylor and Michelle exceeded already high standards for excellence in the classroom, service to the community and the University,” said Peter Brodie, alumni relations director at ESU. “It has been a true pleasure to recognize them for their outstanding dedication to academics and service to the community.”

The Outstanding and Distinguished Senior awards are named in honor of Dwight and Ida Curry Newberg, ESU alumni of the 1930s who provided endowed funds for the awards. In order to be selected for the Newberg Outstanding Senior and Newberg Distinguished Senior awards, students must be nominated by an ESU faculty or staff member and submit information about their academic and extracurricular accomplishments. Fourteen nominees were honored Monday at a dinner with their nominators and families.

The other nominees included Stephanie Clark of Paola, Kelli Coble of Galena, Suzanne Crawford of Emporia, Petra Elmore of Wichita, Timothy “T.J.” Erickson of Olathe, Benjamin Howard of Lenexa, Courtney Knaup of Wichita, Audanell Lester of Emporia, Annabel Osburn of Manhattan, Sarah Sadowsky of Overland Park, Susan Samuelson of Burlington and Aniesa Slack of Oxford.

For more information on the award, biographies of the nominees, details on making nominations, and listings of previous winners, see the Newberg Senior Awards page at the Emporia State University Advancement Web site, www.emporia.edu/alumni.
