Council Grove splits with Chapman

Thursday, April 30, 2009

The Council Grove baseball team split a doubleheader at Chapman on Tuesday in a break from Flint Hills League action.

The Braves got a good starting debut from freshman pitcher T.J. Segebart in Game One, as Segebart pitched a complete game, but Chapman still managed to win 4-2. In the second game, Council Grove put together seven runs in the first two innings, then withstood a seventh-inning rally to win 8-7.

Segebart gave up seven hits in going the distance in the first game, but Chapman’s Skip Mayberry outdueled him, giving up just three hits in a complete-game win. Mayberry also helped himself out with a home run in the fifth. Council Grove got one run on a walk with the bases loaded in the fourth inning and another in the fifth when Derek Ziegenhirt singled to bring home Dusty Maas, but the Braves left seven runners on base in the two-run loss.

Council Grove and Chapman traded the lead in the first inning of Game Two, with the Braves getting three to open the game and the Irish answering with four in the bottom of the inning. Sean Carr hit a two-run homer in the first for Council Grove, and Dusty Maas singled home a run and scored on Carr’s homer. Wes Roddy belted a two-run homer during the Braves’ four-run second inning, singled home a big insurance run in the sixth and also picked up the win on the mound. After struggling in the first inning, Roddy held the Irish scoreless through the next four, and Carr pitched the final two innings for the save, withstanding Chapman’s late three-run rally.

Council Grove coach Joe Buchanan said the Braves may have played as well Tuesday as they have all season over 14 innings.

“Mayberry is an outstanding pitcher; even so, we had ourselves in a position to win (Game One),” Buchanan said. “And our bats were pretty good in Game Two. If we continue to play like this, we should put up some wins over the (next) several days.”

Council Grove (5-5, 4-2) returns to FHL action tonight when it travels to Herington, and the Braves will go to Northern Heights on Friday. Both doubleheaders will begin at 4:30 p.m.

Miller, Kuhlmann break Olpe school records

The Olpe track team sent split squads to the Council Grove Invitational and the Conrad Nightingale Invitational at Halstead High School last week. Highlighting the split-squad performance was Luke Miller’s establishment of a new school record in the long jump and Natalie Kuhlmann breaking the school record in the pole vault.

Miller jumped 22 feet, 0 inches at Halstead, finishing in second place at the meet April 23-24. He also earned a sixth-place finish in the 200 meters. Also at Halstead, Kulhmann’s vault of 7-0 put her on top of the Eagles’ all-time list, although she didn’t place in the event.

Katelyn Henderson won both the 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter runs for the Eagles. Henderson clocked a time of 5 minutes, 40.46 seconds in the 1,600 and 12:30.96 in the 3,200. Henderson joined with Kathryn Flott, Camille Webb and Nicole Wendling to comprise the 4x800 relay team, which finished third with a time of 10:48.77. Rachel Hall finished fourth in the javelin.

At Council Grove on April 23 and 24, Emmy Redeker posted the Eagle girls’ best finish, coming in third in the high jump at 4-10.
