tournament
The Flint Hills Catbackers scholarship golf tournament will be held May 30 at Municipal Golf Course in Emporia. The tournament is a four-person scramble and cost $70 per person, which inclues green fee, cart, lunch and refreshments. Emporia Rec Track Club
The Emporia Recreation Center’s Track Club opens practice on May 12. The club is open for grades 1-8 and is designed for instructional learning and enjoyment of track and field. Practices will be held Mondays and Wednesdays at 6 p.m. at the Emporia Middle School track and will continue through June 18. The deadline to sign up is May 1. Emporia Baseball
Academy
The new Emporia Baseball Academy was formed as an extension of the Emporia Recreation Commission’s summer baseball program. The academy will provide six weeks of high-level instruction for youth in the Emporia area. Participants will develop their skills and learn the game from highly qualified instructors and will play in the ERC league and some weekend tournaments.
The academy will be divided into three age groups: 8-and-under, 10-and-under and 12-and-under. Practices will be held four days a week at Trusler Sports Complex starting on June 1.
The registration fee will be $125 for one child, and $100 for each additional child. Payment plans will be available. The full amount must be received by June 15. Contact the ERC at 340-6300.
Spring Golf Scramble
The third annual USD 253 Spring Golf Scramble will be held May 2 at Emporia Municipal Golf Course. The scramble will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
The entry fee for a four-person team is $260 ($65 per person or $45 for those with an annual pass) and includes registration, green fee, cart and lunch. Hole prizes will be awarded, as well as prizes for putting and chipping contests and door prizes. The top three teams in each flight will earn T-shirts and cash prizes of $75 per person for first place, $50 for second place and $25 for third place. Youth track meet
The Emporia Track Club’s Youth Track and Field meet will be held May 26 at 6 p.m. at Welch Stadium. Anyone can enter, and no pre-registration is required. Summer Camps
Applications are being accepted for the Emporia Basketball Summer Camps. Available camps include:
F June 1-4 — 1st-under Basketball Camp; Shooter Extreme Shooting Camp; deadline to register May 22
F June 8-11 — 2nd-3rd Grade and 4th-5th Grade Basketball Camps; deadline May 29
F June 15-18 — 6th-7th-8th Grade Basketball Camp; deadline June 5
Emphasis of the general-session camps will be on the basic fundamentals of passing, dribbling, shooting, ballhandling and learning basketball awareness. The camps are for grades K-8. Cost for all camps is $40. A $10 discount will apply for each additional child of the same family for each program.

Emporia Summer League
Registration is being accepted through June 19 for the Emporia Summer basketball league. The league is for first- through sixth-graders and will be held on weeknights during the month of July, with a minimum schedule of 10 games. Teams will be set according to age group.
A T-shirt uniform will be included with the camp’s $50 fee. A discount of $10 will apply for each additional child of the same family for each program. The league schedule will attempt to avoid conflicting with the Emporia Recreation Center’s baseball program. Open enrollment is available to all area students, and organized teams from other towns are encouraged. Breakfast and lunch will be served free by EHS.

Junior golf camp
Emporia Municipal Golf Course will host a junior golf camp from 9 a.m. to noon June 2-4 for kids ages 7 and up. Participants will learn golf techniques, etiquette and proper use of clubs. The camp fee will be $50. For more information, contact Ken Roper at 342-8442 or 343-0733.
Men’s slo-pitch

USSSA and Fun Valley in Hutchinson will have a men’s slo-pitch tournament for C-, D- and E-teams on May 16 and 17. C-teams will play on May 17, D-teams will play on May 16 and E-teams will play on both days. Entry fee is $250. The deadline to register is 5 p.m. May 12. Send your entry and fee to Fun Valley, P.O. TRYSA summer camp
TRYSA will once again offer its week-long summer soccer camp, hosted by Challenger British Soccer, from June 8 to June 12 at the TRYSA complex.
The camp will consist of half-day sessions for 7-to-14-year-olds, either from 9 a.m. to noon or 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. It will be open to 3- and 4-year-olds from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and to 5-and 6-year-olds from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The British coaches at the camp can be hosted during their stay for a discounted camp rate. All kids attending camp will receive a free soccer shirt and ball. Jeff Boschee
Basketball Clinic
Former Kansas basketball player Jeff Boschee, now head coach at The Barstow School in Kansas City, Mo., will have a basketball clinic in Emporia on July 21 and 22 for players entering Grades 3-9 in the fall of 2009.
The clinic will emphasize shooting, passing and dribbling in a fast-paced, educational and fun environment. A current KU player will assist with the clinic; past Jayhawks who have helped out include Mario Chalmers, Darrell Arthur and Russell Robinson.
Entry into the clinic costs $75 per player, which includes instruction, a backpack, a T-shirt, a basketball and an autograph session with players and coaches. Maximum capacity will be 65 players. Special teams camp
Mid-America Nazarene University in Olathe will host the Midwest Special Teams Camp for the fourth consecutive year on July 9 and 10.
The camp, recognized as the longest-running instructional program in the country for special teams players, offers instruction for kickers, punters and centers from ages 12-21. Other sessions will be held June 22-23 at the University of Nebraska-Omaha and June 24-25 at the University of Iowa.

Youth tournaments
in Manhattan
Manhattan is hosting three youth baseball tournaments over the next two months. All tournaments are three-game guarantee USSSA qualifiers for ages U8 to U14. Cost of each tournament is $275. The Don Sherley Indian Classic is Saturday and Sunday. The MBA Classic is May 9-10, and the Youth Leadership Foundation TOC is May 23-24. Offensive line camps
Wichita South head football coach Tony Johnson’s annual Assembly Line Five camps for offensive linemen begin in June. The camps teach linemen basic fundamentals, as well as techniques for drive blocking, reach blocking, down blocking, zone concepts and double-teaming, trapping and pulling, and pass protection. The camps feature current and former NFL linemen.
Camp dates and sites will be as follows: June 20 at Avila University in Kansas City, Mo.; June 27 at Richland Hills High School in Richland, Texas; July 11 at Wichita South; July 18 at Southeast High School in Cherokee; and July 25 at Moundridge High School.

The Ten Star basketball camp is accepting final application for its annual basketball came. The Ten Star camp is by initation only. Boys and girls ages 10-19 are eligible to apply.
