Art lovers and members of the betting crowd can get together Friday night for the Emporia Arts Council’s “A Grand Night at the Races,” a fundraising event featuring on-screen horse races, mock betting and an art auction.
The event will begin at 6 p.m. at the arts center, 618 Mechanic St. The betting windows will open at 6:30. Track entry fees will be $25 per person.
“We will have six races that were pre-recorded at some time in the last few years,” said Melissa Windsor, executive director of the arts council. “There will be mock betting on the winners of the races, and those who win at the end will have funny money they can spend at an art auction.”
The auction will include work donated by both regional and local artists, including a Terry Maxwell print, an Ed Barker earthenware bottle, a steel sculpture by David Edwards, mounted photographs by Harold Gaston, an original painting by Peggy Lyon, and assorted paintings, engravings, pottery and glass.
“This is a first-time event,” Windsor said. “We’re really excited about it. We know it will be a lot of fun.”
The $25 entrance fee will get people the chance to bet on the races while enjoying an evening of food and fun with friends, Windsor said.
“For a great cause, of course.”
