Spartans nearly knock off Seaman

Wednesday, April 29, 2009

Two road losses to powerhouse Seaman, both not decided until the late innings, dropped Emporia High’s baseball team to a .500 record on Tuesday and stretched the Spartans’ losing streak to four games.

Emporia led 4-0 through three-and-a-half innings of Game One before a six-run fourth inning for the Vikings proved to be too much to overcome, as Seaman prevailed 7-5. The Vikings scored three runs in the sixth inning of Game Two, turning a one-run game into a 7-3 decision.

“Both games were good games,” EHS coach Mike Strickland said, “and we just didn’t execute.”

Emporia got two runs in the first inning of Game One to jump on top, with Remington Pinick bringing home both runs with a single. The Spartans widened that lead in the third when Matt Fry singled to score two. But three EHS errors in the bottom of the fourth helped Seaman storm back, and Strickland went to the bullpen, bringing in Loucks to replace Fry on the mound after five runs were already in. Another run came in to give Seaman a 6-4 lead.

In the top of the sixth, Derek Nielsen belted his second home run in as many games, a solo shot to left field that pulled Emporia within one.
