Spartans break scoreless streak

Wednesday, April 29, 2009

Emporia High got a needed boost to both its won-lost record and its psyche on Tuesday night at TRYSA. The booster shot: a Highland Park team that was easy to attack and score on.

A different Spartan netted each goal as Emporia cruised to a 6-0 win, emphatically ending a three-game scoreless streak. Four of the goals came in a first-half stretch of a little more than 20 minutes, a scoring burst much enjoyed for a Spartan team that’s been shut out five times so far this year.

“Our confidence really hasn’t been too high,” said senior Rachelle VanGundy, who scored the Spartans’ second goal. “We started off really, really good at the beginning of the year, and recently, we haven’t been able to knock any in. So it was good to get that feel back.”
