Brooke Kent’s seventh place finish in the heptathlon was the top performance for Emporia State on Monday during the first day of the 2009 MIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Justine Davenport finished 16th and Kaylea Goff 17th for ESU in the heptathlon, the only event held for the women on the first day of the championships at Maryville, Mo.
The men opened with the decathlon and Emporia State’s Tony Granillo finished eighth, scoring one point for the team. Granillo moved into the final scoring spot by winning the 1,500 meters — the decathlon’s final event — by nearly 15 seconds.
Kent was in fifth place after the first day of competition and had moved up to third going into the final event of the day, the 800 meters. She ran a 2:47.90 for 486 points to place 14th in the field of 17 competitors. She ended the two-day competition with 4,397 points and just missed the provisional qualifying standard by three points.
Both the ESU men and women are in sixth place in the team standings. The MIAA Outdoor Championships resume on Saturday and Sunday at Missouri Southern in Joplin, Mo.
