The drought continues

Tuesday, April 28, 2009

On Monday at Topeka West, Emporia High’s struggling offense controlled possession and took more shots for a change. But the result was the same.

For the third straight game and fifth time this season, the Spartans were held scoreless, losing 1-0 to Topeka West.

The Spartans took 25 shots total and 12 shots on goal, but they could not get past Topeka West goalie Jana Stuhr.

“Our inability to capitalize on many scoring opportunities combined with our many mistakes on all parts of the field led to a disappointing result tonight,” EHS coach John Decker said. “We continue to struggle to put points on the board, and in this game it really came back and bit us.”

EHS goalie Melanie Nuessen had another solid game. She was helped by the EHS defense, which held Topeka West to only nine shots and five shots on goal.

Topeka West’s Ali McMahan broke a scoreless tie in the 95th minute with the game-winning goal.

Emporia dropped to 4-5-1 with the loss. The Spartans are back in action today at home against Highland Park. Kickoff is at 6 p.m.
