Council Grove sweeps Mission Valley

Monday, April 27, 2009

A doubleheader sweep of Mission Valley was what Council Grove’s baseball team felt it needed Friday night, and that’s what the Braves got.

On the strength of an 11-run sixth inning, Council Grove run-ruled the Vikings 18-8 in Game One. The Braves trailed 6-4 after three innings following a third inning that saw Mission Valley score six unearned runs off starter Derek Ziegenhirt. But Council Grove put together three runs in the fifth, two coming home on a single by Broc Finch. After Mission Valley got two runs in its half of the fifth to retake the lead 8-7, the Braves blew the game wide open in the sixth and then brought it to a stop. Ten straight Council Grove hitters reached base and scored to cap the win. Wes Roddy, who relieved Ziegenhirt and got the win, smacked a two-run homer in the third inning.

The second game was all Council Grove, as the Braves ended their day’s work in just four innings with a 15-0 win. Seven different Braves had hits and seven scored. Dusty Maas went 3-for-3 with a walk and scored four runs. Scott Bowles went 2-for-2, drew two walks and drove in two runs. Council Grove starting pitcher Sean Carr earned his third win in four starts, allowing just two hits and two walks and striking out eight. The effort was Carr’s second complete game and his first shutout.

Council Grove is 4-4 overall and 4-2 in the Flint Hills League. The Braves have three doubleheaders on the schedule this week, starting with Tuesday nonleague games at Chapman.

“We felt we had to sweep to stay in the league race, and it was good to do it,” Council Grove coach Joe Buchanan said. “We didn’t really get a handle on Game One until the sixth. We won’t be able to be that careless against most of our schedule, but like we’ve done in most of our wins this season, we came from behind. Then with Mission Valley out of pitching in the second game, our offense was more than lively. I think we are improving.”
