Emporia High’s softball team suffered a pair of run-rule losses at Shawnee Heights on Friday.
Following a 12-run first inning for the T-Birds, the Spartans dropped Game One in three innings by a 16-1 count. EHS (2-8) managed just one hit in the four-inning Game Two, getting shut out 15-0.
Cassandra Huth started both games for the Spartans. The junior lasted eight batters in the first inning of the opening game, recording only one out before being relieved by freshman Gabriella Tabares-Bohrer. Tabares-Bohrer surrendered a pair of home runs before EHS finally got out of the inning.
Emporia collected five hits in Game One and got its only run of the doubleheader in the second inning, when singles by Megan Burton and Maryann Bennett set up an RBI hit by Whitney Page.
“They’re a good ballclub, but... one thing’s for sure: we didn’t hit tonight,” EHS coach Ray Owens said. “I don’t think the pitching was better than anything we’ve seen yet. We just didn’t hit tonight.”
Tabares-Bohrer got the Spartans’ only hit in Game Two. Heights (7-5) was similarly dominant in that game, getting seven runs in the first inning, one in the second, four in the third and three in the fourth to end it.
“I just put together that you’re playing a pretty good ballclub and you’re having one of your worst nights at the plate,” Owens said, “and it all adds up to taking a spanking.”
Emporia travels to Seaman for a doubleheader on Tuesday.
