The Emporia State baseball team’s 12-game winning streak ended on Friday night at Missouri Southern, where the Hornets lost 11-4.
Kenny Burkhead got Emporia State on top with an RBI single in the first, then scored on a groundout to make it 2-0. After Southern’s Jacob Taylor hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first, the Hornets got back-to-back RBI singles by Andy Cotton and Conner Crumbliss in the second to retake the lead, 4-2. But Southern again tied the game in its half of the second, and ESU didn’t reach the scoreboard again, not getting another hit until the seventh inning.
Cotton finished 2-for-3 for the Hornets. Marc Albers also had an RBI for Emporia State. Ryan Anthony surrendered six runs and five hits in three innings and took his second loss of the season.
Emporia State (38-7, 25-4 MIAA) can still clinch the MIAA regular season title with three more wins in their last seven games. They take on Southern again today in Joplin, Mo., in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
