Brenda Holmes sees life through a variety of lenses.
Holmes, a local photographer, has made photography an integral part of her life and last week won Newsweek’s Photo of the Week contest for a photo she took at Jones Park of a bee and a flower. She said photography is about patience — it took her an hour and a half to get the photo.
Not a day goes by that Holmes isn’t out taking photos, she said.
“I take pictures every day.”
The winning picture was taken with her Nikon D300 that her boyfriend Tim Thomson gave her. Holmes started out with photography 27 years ago on a 35 mm Nikon.
“My father got to the point where he restricted how many pictures I could take,” she said, adding that the film was getting expensive to develop.
That love for shooting photographs extends into today.
“To me it’s more of an art form,” she said. “I do whatever strikes my fancy. It’s very cathartic. I do it for creativity purposes.”
Holmes said she goes out and just looks for things to photograph. She recently stumbled on a cattle drive and also likes to shoot Harley-Davidson photographs.
“There’s a Zen about it for me,” she said. “It’s been a lesson on how to live life moment by moment and frame by frame.”
