EMPORIA MIDDLE SCHOOL teacher Dennis Newell, who has been selected to be an Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellow as part of the Triangle Coalition for Science and Technology Education.
• Seventh-grade students Maddie Bair, Megan Hilbish, Nollan Kirmer, Miranda Lane, James Olsson, Andy Renteria and Jacob Wright, who have qualified for state recognition through the Duke University Talent Identification Program.
• Colin Cooper, Jordan Reber and Kegan Magathan, Turning Point Learning Center students who brought home medals from the Kansas State Science and Engineering Fair held April 3 at Friends University in Wichita.
• Dalton Meyer, 13, who won the 7th Annual youth essay contest sponsored by the Flint Hills Gobbler Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation. For his win, Meyer was awarded a shotgun, with which he harvested a 22-pound mature gobbler on April 4 during opening day of the Kansas Youth Turkey hunting season.
• The Emporia State University Hornet softball team, which swept Southwest Baptist in two games on Saturday.
• The ESU 400-meter relay team of Derwin Hall, Josh Shuler, Kenton Lonberger and Sam Williams, who beat their own school record by winning the event in 40.87 seconds at the VS Athletics Beach Invitational on Saturday.
• The Emporia High School Spartan swimmers, who finished in second place at a swimming meet in Manhattan on Monday.
• All who participated in Laps 4 Landon, a cystic fibrosis fundraiser held Tuesday at ESU’s Welch Stadium.
• EHS golfer Zach Young, who took first place at the Emporia Invitational Tuesday at the Emporia Municipal Golf Course.
