Peggy Ziesmer of Cottonwood Falls drove away in a 1992 Geo Metro convertible Tuesday after a drawing for one of two cars that will be given away to raise funds for local businessman Dan Tebbetts.
Tebbetts was diagnosed last year with bladder cancer. Aggressive treatment shrunk the size of the tumor enough to allow surgery, which revealed the cancer had spread to his stomach.
Friends of Tebbetts are raising money to help pay for medical expenses.
Tebbetts drew the name of the winner Tuesday morning at his business, D & T Auto Sales, before going to the hospital for treatment.
“She was going to be giving her car to her 14-year-old daughter,” organizer Connie Lewis said of Ziesmer’s plans.
Ticket sales are underway now for a 1967 Camaro. The cost is $20 per ticket, or 3 tickets for $50.
“As a matter of fact, the Camaro tickets are selling themselves,” Lewis said. “We can’t hardly keep up with people wanting tickets.”
The car is expected to be on display the evening of May 5 at the Granada Theatre, where a concert is planned to benefit Tebbetts. Callie Agler and a band, The Usual Suspects, will perform, with
SC Dixon acting as master of ceremonies. The cost is $15 for one ticket and $25 for two tickets.
An auction will be held in conjunction with the concert.
“We have some Clint Bowyer items for our auction and they are just awesome,” Lewis said.
Bowyer, who was reared in Emporia, is a leading driver in the NASCAR series and the 2008 Nationwide Series champion. His primary sponsor is General Mills.
The Bowyer-autographed goods include the first autographed die-cast No. 33 car, a No. 33 autographed fan jacket and a ball cap autographed not only by Bowyer, but by team owner Richard Childress and team drivers Kevin Harvick, Jeff Burton and Casey Mears.
“And that is the only one,” Lewis said. “We were really pleased to get that from him.”
