Burlington recognized
To mark Earth Day in Kansas, Gary Smith, director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development Business and Community Programs presented Burlington with a certificate of recognition for its efforts to protect the environment, with its Phase II Sewer project. Funding for the City’s project, a $3,360,000 loan and a $1,080,000 grant, provided through the USDA’s Water & Waste Disposal Program, will benefit about 2,790 users.
A department news release said Burlington has experienced many challenges associated with an aging sanitary sewer infrastructure. It is estimated that the pipe in parts of the city are well over 100 years old. The project is expected to solve that problem, cut energy costs by for the system and benefit the environment in and around Burlington.
