A young Americus woman has died from injuries she received Wednesday afternoon when her car apparently crossed a center line on U.S. Highway 50 and struck a semi-tractor trailer coming from the opposite direction.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol report, Shawnda Lynn Mitchell, 20, was driving a 1992 Ford Tempo west on Highway 50, about six miles west of Emporia, when the accident happened.
The car collided with an eastbound 2007 Peterbilt truck driven by Mark A. Jaeger, 52, of Harvel, Ill., shortly after 3 p.m. Wednesday.
Mitchell was airlifted to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, where she died at 9:55 p.m. Wednesday, KHP reported.
Both Mitchell and Jaeger were wearing seat belts.
Witnesses said the truck caught fire after the collision. Jaeger escaped without injury.

How sad she left such a young child behind! It was heartbreaking enough without that too. God bless the little boy who will never know him mom.

My heart and prayers go to all of her family. Yet another very tragic situation for a family and most of all the very young child, another who will not have "mommy" to grow with. I wish the very best for this child and the family.

As sad as it is, my sympathies also go out to the truck driver, he has to live with the 'second guessing' and the 'why didn't I do ?' for the rest of his life.
His life is irrevocably changed, and he will always suffer the grief, even though it wasn't any fault of his.
