A young Americus woman has died from injuries received Wednesday when the car she was driving collided with a semi-tractor trailer Wednesday afternoon on U.S. Highway 50, about six miles west of Emporia.
Shawnda Lynn Mitchell, 20, was headed west on U.S. 50 when she apparently drove her 1992 Ford Tempo across the center line and collided with an eastbound 2007 Peterbilt semi driven by 52-year-old Mark A. Jaeger of Harvel, Ill., shortly after 3 p.m. Wednesday.
Both Mitchell and Jaeger were wearing seat belts.
Mitchell was taken from the scene by helicopter to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, where she died at 9:55 p.m., according to KHP.

She has since passed away. My prayers go out to her friends and family. And the passing truck driver who ran to help the semi in the accident deserves a medal. He pulled the driver free right before the truck's fuel tanks blew up.
