The Chase County baseball team earned two dominant wins on Saturday, beating Flinthills 16-1 in a three-inning run-rule game and defeating Derby Home School 13-3 in five innings.
In the Derby game, Greg Davis and Shawn Talkington each had two hits and three RBI, and Tanner Line had three hits and an RBI, including a double. Tyler Mullins drove in two runs. Jace Francka made his first outing of the year on the mound, striking out four in four innings and walking three. Mullins closed out the game on the mound.
The Bulldogs came out mashing against Flinthills, scoring 13 runs in the first inning. Jim Lauer made his first career start on the mound for Chase County and earned a three-inning no-hitter despite giving up four walks. He struck out three. Davis had two hits and four RBI, Lauer and Dylan Kelsheimer each had two hits and Mullins had three.
“Flinthills has a really inexperienced team and is shallow on pitching due to low numbers, much like we are,” CCHS coach Jay Talkington said. “They played the night before, and you could tell their regular pitchers were not available.”
The Bulldogs banged out a total of 26 hits and made just two errors over the two games. Chase County is now 6-2 on the year.
Chase County wins home tournament
Chase County’s softball team split a doubleheader with Osage City on Friday and Saturday, then won the Chase County Invitational on Saturday with two run-rule victories.
The Bulldogs defeated Flinthills 10-0 in Saturday’s first tournament game. Aubrey Watts and Taylor Rains both had triples for the Bulldogs, and Briana Talkington pitched all five innings, walking one and striking out one. In Game Two, CCHS beat Wichita Home School 15-5, with Kelly Hannigan striking out five batters and walking none. Ashley Cahoone connected for a home run in the third inning, and Rains added another triple in the fourth.
Chase County defeated Osage City in Friday’s Game One by a 2-1 score before dropping Game Two 7-1. The Bulldogs are now 6-2 on the season with a 4-2 record in the Flint Hills League. They’ll play host to West Franklin tonight.
Argabright finishes
18th at Kansas Relays
Olpe’s Bradley Argabright finished 18th in the boys 800-meter run at last weekend’s Kansas Relays at Memorial Stadium in Lawrence. Argabright finished his run in 1 minute, 59.88 seconds.
Council Grove’s Kailea Hayes and Darrah Miller also competed in Lawrence last weekend. Miller finished 12th in the girls high jump with a leap of 4 feet, 11 inches. Hayes competed in the preliminaries of the girls 400-meter dash, finishing 12th with a time of 1:01.46.
Lebo boys come in
4th at MdCV Invite
Lebo finished fourth in the boys track and field competition and fifth in the girls field at the Marais des Cygnes Valley Invitational on Thursday.
Alex Linsey had a productive day for the Wolves, winning the javelin competition and placing third in the discus. The sophomore recorded a javelin throw of 157 feet, 4 inches and a discus toss of 101-7. Dylan Kelley finished second in the high jump with a jump of 5-8 and third in the long jump with a leap of 18-9 1/2. Trevor White finished second out of three competitors in the hurdles with a time of 53.01 seconds, Justyn Schroeder finished third in the 800 meters with a time of 2:15.65. As a team, Lebo’s boys finished with 70 points, 28 behind winner Burlingame.
The Lebo girls had 47 team points. Deidra Jones finished second in the discus with an 86-0 throw, and Drucilla Antony placed second in the 300 hurdles, finishing in 56.56 seconds. The Wolves’ 4x100 relay team also logged a top-three finish, running in 57.40 seconds.
Hartford’s boys finished ninth out of 10 teams with 21 points, and the girls finished sixth with 42. Highlighting the day for the Jaguar boys were a second-place finish in the 4x800 relay with a time of 9:31.66, just more than a second behind winner Waverly, and a third-place run from Spencer Rosenquist in the 3,200 meters. Rosenquist finished in 11:19.63. Among highlights for the Hartford girls, the 4x100 relay team placed first with a time of 54.60; Samantha Wilkerson finished third in the triple jump with a 29-4; Christina Lee was third in the discus with a toss of 81-10; and Callie Clark placed third in the 400-meter dash at 1:06.67. West Franklin won the girls competition with 109 team points.
Madison girls win
Hartford Invitational
Madison’s girls track and field team won the Hartford Invitational last Thursday, and the Bulldog boys finished second at the event.
Tera Titus’ winning throw in the discus was among the standout performances for the Bulldog girls. Titus’ toss of 120-0 was 11 1/2 feet ahead of teammate Shelby Buster, who finished in second place. Buster earned a first-place mark in the javelin with a throw of 123-8 1/2, and Titus finished second in the shot put with a throw of 33-10. Malacie Bybee earned first-place finishes in both the pole vault and the 100 hurdles, Morgan Stout finished first in the 100-meter dash and Aadrian McCollum won the 1,600-meter race. Cassie Drake won the 800 meters, running in a time of 2:48.
The Bulldog boys also took first place in the discus, thanks to Jack Coe’s throw of 135-3 1/2. Henry Ott won the javelin contest with a toss of 167-1, and Zach Fox jumped 10 feet to win the pole vault, just ahead of Ott. Caleb Hamilton won the 100-meter dash for Madison, clocking an 11.42 time, and Wade Elwood won the 300 hurdles with a time of 46.93. The Madison girls had 180 points, 60 ahead of second-place Southern Coffey County; the Bulldog boys finished with 112 points, eight behind Burlingame.
Hartford finished third in the girls competition and seventh among boys. Kellie Farr earned a title in the high jump with a jump of 5-0, and Callie Clark won the 400 meters in a time of 67.01. Samantha Wilkerson finished third in both the long jump and the triple jump, and Bronte Bailey finished second in the pole vault. Among highlights for the Jaguar boys, Logan Grieder finished second in the triple jump, Spencer Rosenquist finished third in the 3,200 meters and the 4x800 relay squad finished third.
Lebo’s girls finished fifth, while its boys finished third. Drucilla Antony won the 300-meter hurdles competition with a time of 56.60. Deidra Jones finished third in the girls discus competition and Jessica Robertson was third in the 800 meters. Among the Lebo boys’ best performances, Zach Putnam won a title for the Wolves in the boys high jump with a distance of 6-0, and Dylan Kelley finished second. Kelley won the triple jump with a 38-9 performance and finished second in the long jump and 100-meter dash.
